FAQs about Vilter renewable natural gas solutions for landfills

What equipment compresses landfill gas for RNG production?

Vilter single-screw compressors can support multiple stages of landfill gas upgrading and renewable natural gas production. Depending on the process design, VSG and VSSG compressors can be applied as:

  • Feed gas compressors upstream of carbon dioxide removal
  • Recycle, vacuum or feed gas compressors within nitrogen-removal processes
  • Product gas compressors that boost purified biomethane to pipeline pressure

The appropriate compressor and configuration depend on gas composition, flow, pressure and treatment requirements. Contact Vilter by filling out the above form to evaluate the needs of your landfill RNG application.

How do you convert landfill gas to pipeline-quality natural gas?

Landfill gas must be treated to remove moisture, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other contaminants before the purified biomethane can enter a natural gas pipeline. A typical upgrading process may include:

  • Boosting collected gas to maintain pressure through contaminant-removal equipment
  • Dehydrating the gas with low- and high-pressure chilling systems
  • Compressing feed gas before carbon dioxide removal
  • Providing recycle, vacuum or feed gas compression during nitrogen removal
  • Boosting purified biomethane to the pressure required by the receiving pipeline

Because every landfill has a different gas composition and process design, Vilter works with operators and system designers to determine the appropriate compression equipment for each stage.

What makes Vilter single-screw compressors well-suited for landfill gas?

Landfill gas flow and operating conditions can change over time. Vilter single-screw compressors are designed to maintain reliable, efficient performance across these variable conditions.

The balanced single-screw design minimizes axial and radial forces, helping reduce bearing loads, vibration and sound. Vilter’s exclusive Parallex slide system independently adjusts capacity and volume ratio so the compressor can respond efficiently to changing gas volumes while reducing the risk of over-compression or under-compression.

Additional advantages include:

  • High suction-pressure capability
  • Compression ratios ranging from 2:1 to 20:1
  • Flexible capacity control
  • Reduced bearing and shaft-seal loads
  • Simplified service and maintenance
  • Reliable operation in demanding RNG environments
What contaminants are found in landfill gas?

Landfill gas may contain carbon dioxide, moisture, sulfur compounds, nitrogen, oxygen, non-methane organic compounds and other trace gases. The type and concentration of these constituents vary by site, so treatment requirements must be based on the specific gas composition and the quality standards of the receiving pipeline.

A landfill gas upgrading process may include:

  • Dehydration to remove moisture
  • Carbon dioxide removal
  • Nitrogen removal
  • Pretreatment for sulfur compounds and other contaminants
  • Final compression of the purified biomethane

Vilter works with landfill operators and system designers to evaluate gas conditions and determine the appropriate compressor configuration, materials and operating parameters for the application.

Can Vilter compressors handle contaminants such as hydrogen sulfide and siloxanes?

Vilter VSG and VSSG compressors can operate with landfill gas containing hydrogen sulfide when the compressor, lubricant and supporting systems are properly configured for the gas composition.

When hydrogen sulfide is present, special oil additives are required to help protect the compressor from corrosion. Vilter’s standard warranty applies at H₂S concentrations below 100 ppm. Applications above 100 ppm require direct review by the Vilter team.

Siloxanes and other contaminants should be addressed through the appropriate gas-treatment and pretreatment processes before compression. Compressor materials, lubricant selection and system configuration should also be evaluated for each application.

Contact Vilter with your landfill gas analysis so our specialists can review the operating conditions and recommend the appropriate next steps.
