Price Chopper grocery stores, a part of Golub Corporation, prides itself on innovation and has made substantial investments to incorporate various green and energy-saving initiatives throughout its stores.

Challenge
Price Chopper wanted to improve its refrigeration systems to reduce energy costs, make it easier to commission and maintain, and reduce downtime. Traditional parallel racks systems separate the compressors from the electronics, leading to many electronic components and making it complicated to troubleshoot. Traditional systems do not provide the operator all of the information they need to optimize their facility.

Solution


Price Chopper installed the Copeland™ scroll digital compressor with CoreSense™ Diagnostics which they describe “as more than a refrigeration compressor with onboard diagnostics that provides real-time intelligence that tells technicians exactly what they need to know.” 


Put in context of an entire store, there is a “single view into the entire network of facilities.” The package includes control and monitoring of a store’s HVACR, lighting, and other systems. Price Chopper invested in optimized air-cooled condensers that allow head pressure to float down with outside ambient temperatures, taking full advantage of the expanded compressor operating envelope for significant energy savings. Other energy-saving measures are shown in the table below.


The Copeland™ scroll digital compressor with CoreSense™ Diagnostics offers features that allow customers to experience fewer compressor failures, thereby saving cost, reducing equipment downtime, and avoiding food spoilage.
